Getting started with athletics

Everyone starts somewhere

Whether you are trying athletics for the first time, returning after a break or looking for a welcoming club, UK Deaf Athletics is here to help you explore your next steps.

You can take part for fun, fitness, friendship or competition. You do not need to be an experienced athlete or have ambitions to compete internationally.

Find an activity near you

UK Deaf Sport’s Activity Finder is a useful place to start looking for local opportunities to get active.

Explore the listings for athletics, running or other activities that interest you. Availability varies by area, and not every club or session will be listed.

Before your first session

Contact the club or organiser before attending. Explain that you are Deaf or hard of hearing and tell them how you prefer to communicate.

You could ask:

  • Do you welcome beginners, and can I try a session?
  • What age groups do you cater for?
  • What does it cost?
  • Can instructions be demonstrated or provided in writing?
  • How will I receive start signals and safety information?

Who should I meet when I arrive?

Communication support varies, so agree what you need directly with the organiser.

Choose what you enjoy

Athletics offers more than running. You might enjoy jumping, throwing, track events, road running or cross-country.

Start at your own pace. A suitable beginner session can help you try different activities and build confidence.

Do I need an audiogram?

You do not need an audiogram to contact UKDA or ask about getting started.

International Deaf competitions have specific hearing eligibility and registration requirements. If you decide to explore that route, visit our Audiogram Guide.

Help your club support you

Small changes can make a big difference, such as demonstrations, clear face-to-face communication, written instructions and agreed visual signals.

Our Advice & Inclusion page has practical tips you can share with a coach or club.
