Deaf Friendly Athletics

Breaking barriers. Building belonging.

Everyone should feel welcome in athletics.

Whether you are a club, coach, volunteer, athlete or family member, this page brings together practical tips and useful resources to help make athletics more inclusive for deaf and hard of hearing people.

Small changes. A more welcoming club.

Ask first
Ask each athlete how they prefer to communicate and what helps them take part. Everyone’s needs are different.

Make communication clear
Get the athlete’s attention before speaking. Face them, keep your mouth visible and speak naturally. Give instructions where everyone can see you.

Show as well as explain
Demonstrate activities. Use written session plans, diagrams and agreed visual signals to support instructions.

Plan ahead
Discuss how athletes will receive start signals, safety instructions and changes to the programme. For competitions, agree arrangements with the organiser and officials in advance.

Include the whole club experience
Think about introductions, group discussions, messages and social activities as well as training. Feeling part of the club matters.

Keep checking in
Ask what is working and what could improve. Keep the conversation open.
